Imagine climbing a spiral staircase that seems to reach for the sky. That’s the experience awaiting you at the Jubiläumswarte.

The Jubiläumswarte stands proudly on the Gallitzinberg. It offers panoramic views of Vienna and the Wienerwald. This observation tower marks a spot rich in history and recreation.

The first tower here was built in 1898. It celebrated the 50th anniversary of Kaiser Franz Joseph I’s reign. This original Kaiser-Jubiläums-Warte was made of wood. Sadly a storm destroyed it later that same year.

Undeterred the Ottakringer Verschönerungsverein stepped in. This group dedicated to the area’s beautification bought an iron tower. This tower was originally showcased at the 1898 Jubilee Exhibition. In 1899 the iron tower was erected here. It stood 27.5 meters tall. Visitors reached the top via stairs.

A shelter with a restaurant opened at the base of the Jubiläumswarte in 1900. It became a popular destination. But time took its toll. By the Second World War the iron tower was dilapidated. It closed in 1952 and was torn down in 1953.

Vienna rebuilt the Jubiläumswarte. Construction began in 1955 and it opened on September 7 1956. This new tower reached a height of 31 meters. It stands 480 meters above sea level. The new Jubiläumswarte was constructed of reinforced concrete.

In 1998 the former restaurant at the base was transformed. It became the Wiener Waldschule. Here Viennese schoolchildren learn about environmental awareness. They discover the rich animal and tree life of the Wienerwald.

To reach the top of the Jubiläumswarte you climb 183 steps. The spiral staircase winds upwards offering glimpses of the view to come. The observation platform provides a circular vista. To the west stretches the Wienerwald. To the east lies the city of Vienna. On clear days you can see the Hainburger Berge and the Schneeberg. Sometimes even the Weißen Karpaten are visible.

The Jubiläumswarte isn’t just a tower. It’s a symbol of Vienna’s resilience. It is a testament to the city’s commitment to beauty and education. So take a deep breath climb those stairs and experience Vienna from a different perspective.
