“A living monument it is” Husův dům stands before you. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and Czech history.

Originally a medieval house Husův dům underwent several renovations. Renaissance and early Baroque styles shaped its past. In 1923 architect Bohumír Kozák completely transformed it. He added three floors. The facade received a Cubist makeover. This striking design perfectly complements Prague’s unique architectural landscape.

A statue of Jan Hus adorns the building. This is no ordinary statue. It stands as a powerful symbol. It represents the legacy of this important religious reformer. The inscription “Synodal Council of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren” is also visible. Around the statue are reliefs depicting an open Bible with the letters alpha and omega. A lamb is also displayed a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. The name “Husův dům” is clearly visible.

This wasn’t a simple renovation. A five-story functionalist extension was built in the courtyard between 1935 and 1936. It demonstrates another evolution of architectural styles within the complex. Even the seemingly small details like the decorative Cubist frieze on the facade add to the architectural significance of the Husův dům.

Husův dům is much more than a pretty building. Today the building houses the Synod Council of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. The Czech Brethren Church administrative offices are here. The Kalich publishing house operates here. A bookshop and other Evangelical institutions share this space. A pension occupies part of the building. The Kalich Theatre is located in the courtyard building. From 1950 to 1995 the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Charles University was also located here.
