The Potomac Science Center sits on the bank of the Occoquan River. The location gives GMU research faculty and students easy access to water. They can collect samples, conduct experiments, and make excursions.
This 50000-square-foot facility includes teaching and research laboratories. It also has lecture halls, event space, and outdoor education areas. These all support the center’s mission. That mission is research, restoration, education, and public outreach.
LandDesign created the outdoor environmental setting. The project meets LEED Silver certification standards. It features a research dock and rain gardens. An outdoor amphitheater serves as a classroom and event space. Low-impact development techniques are used. Pervious pavers and elevated boardwalks are examples of these techniques. The “Water Story” teaches how stormwater management is integrated into the landscape.
Each roof drain connects to a specific “Water Story” feature. Visitors can follow the path of rainwater. At the building’s entrance, a weir and scupper water feature directs runoff. It goes from the roof into a rain garden. Here, its purification journey begins. Rainwater flows through bioretention plant pits and infiltration swales. It passes through stormwater management elements. The final outlet is either the river or a 5000-gallon rainwater harvesting cistern. This water is then used for on-site irrigation.
Other educational features include a green living wall and native plantings. Also, a rain chain and permeable pavers. All “Water Story” elements are designed as teaching tools. They allow testing water quality. Researchers and the public can interact with the site.
The Occoquan River location is essential to the Potomac Science Center’s mission. There are 15 feet between the upper-level research facility and the lower river-level research dock and plaza. A wooden boardwalk was installed over the riparian buffer. This provides ADA access. It also minimizes land disturbance.
The outdoor space features a research dock and a terraced amphitheater. There’s also a custom “water table”. Students learn about water quality, erosion, and the river ecosystem here.
