Gazetted as a suburb just recently in 2012, McCarrs Creek whispers tales of smugglers, soldiers, and natural wonders. McCarrs Creek, nestled in northern Sydney by the Pittwater, isn’t just a picturesque suburb. It’s a place where history and nature entwine. Originally known as South West Arm, or even MacAa’s Creek, McCarrs Creek takes its name from James McCarr who lived in the area with Ann Haynes around 1820. Ann Haynes herself has a story to tell. Arriving in the colony in 1806, she was later convicted of stealing wheat in 1821. The creek itself has been witness to much more than petty theft. Smugglers once hid their rum casks within its sheltered waters, and illegal stills operated in its upper reaches. During World War II, soldiers camped by the duck ponds. Later, from the 1950s to the 1970s, sand mining operations scarred the landscape, leaving behind tailings ponds that have since been rehabilitated. McCarrs Creek is more than just a waterway. From its source near Mona Vale Road, it flows past Upper and Lower Gledhill Falls. The reserve at its junction with Cicada Creek showcases the diverse ecosystems of the area, from mangroves and saltmarsh to sandstone escarpment and native grasslands. McCarrs Creek has long been a sanctuary for birds. In 1930, the upper reaches of the creek were described as a “veritable bird sanctuary,” accessible by rowboat. The “Silent Pool,” named for its serenity, was home to coachwhip birds, bell-magpies, and a variety of other species. The creek even played a role in the development of airmail services. In 1937, it was proposed as a potential base, with its sheltered waters seen as an ideal location for seaplanes. Today, McCarrs Creek retains its natural beauty, a haven for fish, birds, and marsupials. Bothams Beach, just beyond Holmeport Marina, offers a glimpse of the endangered Pittwater Spotted Gum bushland. The Pittwater Environmental Foundation continues to work on restoring the foreshore, installing nest boxes for gliders and encouraging community involvement in bushcare. McCarrs Creek is a place where the past meets the present, where the whispers of history mingle with the songs of birds. It’s a place that invites you to explore, to discover, and to connect with the natural wonders of Sydney’s northern beaches.
