Imagine Reverend Dr. Clarence True Wilson in 1917. He envisioned a place for Methodism’s social reform right here. He saw past the muddy lot near the U.S. Capitol. His vision led to the construction of the United Methodist Building. It was completed in 1923. The cost was $650000. That is a significant sum for that time.
Most contributions came from Methodist women. They were concerned about families’ well-being. They worried about alcohol abuse. Wilson’s wife, Maude Akin Wilson, even drew the original plans. She was the financial officer and property manager. She was also the director of operations. She played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life.
The United Methodist Building became a hub for important events. Planning for the 1963 March on Washington took place here. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led this historic march. Organizing efforts for the 1968 Poor People’s March also happened here. The building supported protests against the Vietnam War. It supported marches for the Equal Rights Amendment too.
