Orange and black school colors show school spirit. Let me tell you about Baileys Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences. It’s a place with a rich history. Baileys Elementary School first opened its doors in 1952. It has grown into a diverse and dynamic learning environment.
Baileys Elementary became the first magnet school in Fairfax County in 1991. This transformation came after the PTA fought for academic and cultural diversity. Richard Kurin was president of the PTA at that time. They even threatened to sue the school board to redraw boundaries. The goal was to attract a wider range of students. The school focused on arts, science, and technology. This made it appealing to families from different backgrounds.
Baileys Elementary gained national recognition in 1997. President Bill Clinton’s One America Initiative Advisory Board on Race highlighted the school. They called it an educational and social haven. It was a place where students from all backgrounds could thrive.
Lynn Riggs was a science teacher at Baileys Elementary. She earned the title of Fairfax County Teacher of the Year in 2006. Her dedication to education made a big impact.
Budget cuts threatened the magnet transportation buses in 2010. The PTA protested that this would hurt the school’s diversity. The school board listened and decided to maintain the transportation.
To deal with overcrowding, Baileys Elementary opened a second campus. Grades 3 to 5 moved to a converted office building in 2014. The original building still houses kindergarten through second grade.
Baileys Elementary offers a partial Spanish immersion program. Students learn math and science in Spanish. There is also a two-way immersion program for kindergarten. English and Spanish speakers learn together in both languages.
The English for Speakers of Other Languages program supports around 500 students. These students are in grades K-5.
Baileys Elementary joined the Kennedy Center’s CETA program in 1999. This program integrates the arts throughout the curriculum. It provides teachers with professional development.
The school partners with the US Forest Service. This teaches students about conservation. Local artists help students create murals. These murals decorate the school’s walls.
The performing arts program includes chorus, band, violin, and orchestra. Baileys Elementary also has its own theater called the Black Box Theater.
Today over 800 students attend Baileys Elementary School. They represent more than 40 countries. They speak over 30 languages at home. The school nurtures each student’s talents. It values their unique contributions. Baileys Elementary continues to thrive. It is a place where students understand, express, inquire, connect, and hope.
