“Pearl Bridge,” a nickname for the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. It shimmers before us. This bridge isn’t just steel and concrete. It’s a testament to human ingenuity.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge stands as one of the world’s longest suspension bridges. It stretches across the Akashi Strait in west-central Japan. Opened in 1998, it immediately claimed the title of the world’s longest.

Before this colossal structure, ferries braved treacherous waters. The Akashi Strait was a perilous route. In 1955, a severe storm caused two ferries to sink. This tragic event led to 168 deaths. The Japanese government knew they had to act. They needed a safer passage, a bridge.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connects Kobe on Honshu Island to Iwaya on Awaji Island. Awaji Island then links to Shikoku via the Onaruto Bridge. These bridges are vital components of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project. This project links islands across Japan’s Inland Sea.

The bridge spans 3,911 meters. Its central span is 1,991 meters. Two towers support the bridge. They rise 297 meters above the strait. This makes the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge one of the tallest in the world.

Engineers faced immense challenges. The region is seismically unstable. It also experiences severe storms. A complex system of counterweights, pendulums, and steel-truss girders was developed. This system allows the bridge to withstand winds up to 290 kilometers per hour. Amazingly, the bridge can expand and contract up to two meters in a single day.

During construction, the 1995 Kobe earthquake struck. It measured 6.9 on the Richter scale. The earthquake moved the towers. They were still under construction. The central span had to be adjusted by one meter.

Each tower has 20 tuned mass dampers. These TMDs swing opposite the wind’s sway. They balance the bridge. This cancels out the sway. This design allows the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8.5.

Why “Pearl Bridge?” At night, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge illuminates with various colors. Locals say it resembles pearls on a necklace. There are 1,737 illumination lights in total.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge’s construction cost about 500 billion Japanese Yen. That is roughly $3.6 billion. Construction started in 1988. Millions of workers and vast amounts of materials were needed. Over 180,000 tonnes of steel were used. Also, 1.4 million cubic meters of concrete were used.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is not just a crossing. It represents resilience. It showcases innovation. It is a symbol of connection.
