Picture this. You stand before Wong Chuk Hang San Wai. Its history whispers from the stones. This isn’t just any village. It’s a living testament to Hong Kong’s past. Wong Chuk Hang San Wai emerged in the 1860s and 1870s. Its growth mirrored that of its older neighbor Wong Chuk Hang Kau Wai. Established in the 18th century by members of the Chow clan from Guangdong. Wong Chuk Hang Kau Wai was quite different. It lacked the walls and ordered houses of other villages. It simply grew organically.

This new village Wong Chuk Hang San Wai flourished. It even played a role in a famous birth. Sir Shouson Chow was born here in 1861. Think of the changes he must have witnessed. From a small village to the bustling area you see today.

The 1911 census paints a picture of life then. Only 57 people lived in Wong Chuk Hang. 44 of them were men. Imagine the close-knit community. Each person knew every other. Their lives intertwined in the fabric of village life.

Sadly much of Wong Chuk Hang Kau Wai was lost. The construction of the Aberdeen Tunnel caused significant demolition. Yet Wong Chuk Hang San Wai endures. A few historic buildings stand as silent witnesses. Number 10 is particularly noteworthy. It’s a traditional Chinese vernacular house. Accorded a Grade 2 status by the Antiquities Advisory Board it remains a precious piece of history.

Today Wong Chuk Hang San Wai remains a captivating place. It stands as a poignant reminder of Hong Kong’s evolution. A small piece of the past. A reminder of those who came before. A legacy of resilience and adaptation in a constantly changing world. Enjoy this place. Enjoy the stories it holds.
