How often do you think about where the blood comes from for medical emergencies? Right here, near Tel Aviv stands a crucial, life-saving facility the Blood Bank.

The Marcus National Blood Services Center is not just any blood bank. It’s a fortified, underground marvel. This Blood Bank operates under Magen David Adom. Magen David Adom is Israel’s medical emergency, disaster, ambulance, and blood service. Think of it as the Red Cross of Israel.

This state-of-the-art facility is built to withstand rockets, missiles, chemical attacks, and even earthquakes. It ensures blood processing continues uninterrupted.

The Blood Bank became operational sooner than expected. Following attacks in southern Israel, it kicked into action. The Blood Bank’s staff moved equipment into the underground bunker and started saving lives. Dr. Eilat Shinar said this was exactly the moment it was built for.

Protected 15 meters underground, the Blood Bank cost $135 million. The six-story structure can weather almost any storm or attack.

In the days following those attacks, the Blood Bank provided tens of thousands of blood units. They worked hard to supply everything needed. Many were injured and the Blood Bank had to treat them.

The former blood bank couldn’t handle the country’s wartime needs. Rockets reached Tel Aviv in 2014. Discussions began about creating a more protected facility.

The new Blood Bank can store almost twice the blood of its predecessor. It can process over 500,000 units a year compared to the old capacity of 270,000.

Project engineer Moshe Noyovich explained that rockets flying close by made a secure center essential. Now, the team can operate without moving equipment into a bunker during attacks.

Inside the 51,000-square-meter building, donated blood is processed. The Blood Bank features a transportation center and a molecular lab. Its air-filtration system allows staff to work during chemical or biological warfare. A 300-square-meter safe room shields against severe missile threats.

When war began, thousands lined up to donate blood. The Blood Bank received 5,000 units in one day. That’s five times more than usual. Type O blood is ideal because it can be given safely to anyone.

Donated blood goes directly to hospitals and the Israeli military. It treats wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Guillemette Thomas from Doctors Without Borders said blood is part of the resuscitation process. The idea is to have a stock ready when needed.

The Blood Bank ensures Israel’s blood supply is safe. Magen David Adom supplies most of the blood used by Israeli hospitals and all the blood used by the IDF. Protecting the blood supply protects Israel’s future.

Israel’s population is growing. The Blood Bank has the capacity to meet all future blood needs. It is truly the world’s first underground blood bank and processing center.

So, as we stand here, remember the Blood Bank is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of resilience, readiness, and the unwavering commitment to saving lives. It is a vital lifeline for Israel.
