Perhaps the soul of David Bowie lingers here in Warsaw. Right here on Maria Kazimiera Street. This is the David Bowie Mural. It is a vibrant tribute to an artist who found a unique connection with this city.

The David Bowie Mural stands as a testament to a brief but impactful moment in music history. It commemorates Bowie’s visit to Warsaw. This artwork immortalizes Bowie in his iconic Ziggy Stardust persona. The mural marks the 40th anniversary of his visit.

The story goes that in 1976, Bowie traveled with Iggy Pop. They were en route from Berlin to Moscow. During a stopover in Warsaw, Bowie ventured out. He explored the Żoliborz district. He visited a record shop. There he discovered the Śląsk Polish National Song and Dance Ensemble. He was captivated by their recording. In particular, he was drawn to the folk song “Helokanie”.

Bowie bought the LP. He returned to Berlin. He was working on his album Low. He needed lyrics for a melody. He found inspiration in “Helokanie.” The words Bowie sang in “Warszawa” are not Polish. They are a language of his own creation.

Following Bowie’s death in 2016, Stacja Muranów sought to honor him. They crowdfunded the creation of this mural. Dawid Celek created the illustration. It was chosen from 20 designs. It beautifully represents Bowie’s connection to Warsaw.

Iggy Pop recalled Warsaw being scarred by bullet holes. This was from the Second World War. The landscape influenced Bowie’s creative process. It helped him to create a unique atmosphere. Warsaw became a part of his mental landscape.

Brian Eno played a crucial role in shaping the song. He looped a few notes played by Tony Visconti’s son on a piano. Bowie devised the lyrics in less than ten minutes. He wanted to express feelings of yearning for freedom. The result is a powerful piece with vocals performed by Bowie.

Bowie said the song was not meant to be a literal depiction of the city. He saw the album as a concept. “Warszawa” was simply a piece within that concept. Warsaw stole Bowie’s heart for a few hours.

The song “Warszawa” left a lasting impact. Ian Curtis of Joy Division was deeply moved by it. He initially named his band Warsaw. He later changed it to Joy Division.
