Can you imagine this area in ancient Tokyo? It is the site of the mysterious Tomizuka Tomb. Today we stand before what remains of the Tomizuka Tomb. It whispers tales of emperors. It hints at rituals from centuries ago.

The Tomizuka Tomb is a round burial mound. It is called a ‘kofun’ in Japanese. This kofun is located in what is now Fuchu, Tokyo.

Let’s delve into the details that make the Tomizuka Tomb significant. It has a total length of 35 meters. It stands five meters high. Imagine this ancient structure.

The west side and a part of the southeast have been shaved off. This gives us clues about its past. Archaeologists think the burial chamber is a vertical pit. Grave goods were likely placed inside.

Excavations revealed a surrounding moat. It stretched about nine meters wide. This moat offers insights into the tomb’s construction. Cylindrical haniwa and gabled haniwa were discovered. These artifacts help date the Tomizuka Tomb. It likely dates to the latter half of the 5th century. Thus it is slightly older than the Hirayama kofun.

A local resident named yuki1949 commented on the tomb in 2011. He observed it from the sidewalk near the Fuchu City Hall. Trees obscured the view. Yet he could still make out a mound. It was several meters high.

Today the Tomizuka Tomb may seem like a simple mound. But it is a window into Japan’s ancient past. It is a reminder of the powerful figures who once shaped this land. It is proof of their beliefs about the afterlife. The Tomizuka Tomb stands as a testament to time.
