Did you know Emperor Duanzong of the Southern Song dynasty once sought refuge on Tung Lung Island? This small island off the Clear Water Bay Peninsula holds a significant place in Hong Kong’s history. Tung Lung Chau as it’s also known boasts a rich past extending far beyond the reign of this emperor.
Tung Lung Island wasn’t always called Tung Lung Chau. It was once known as Nam Tong Island or Nam Fat Tong. This name change reflects its evolving identity over centuries. The name Tung Lung Chau which means Eastern Dragon Island appeared on maps around 1845. This hints at a connection to the impressive prehistoric stone carving found on the island. This carving a massive 180cm by 240cm is the largest of its kind in Hong Kong. The 1819 Gazetteer of Xin’an County mentions this remarkable piece of history.
The island’s strategic location between Fat Tong Mun Channel and Tathong Channel leading into Victoria Harbour made it a key defensive point. For centuries this resulted in various defensive structures being erected. Tung Lung Fort constructed approximately 300 years ago stands as a testament to this. It’s recently undergone refurbishment. This fort is not the only historic structure on the island. You can also find a Hung Shing Temple a structure built before 1931. Within the temple sits the Holy Rock a huge rock protruding from the back wall.
The island’s strategic importance played a part in World War II. Near Tathong Point there was a small Japanese gun emplacement. Historians believe the presence of this facility might explain why the Allies bombed Tung Lung Island.
But Tung Lung Island is not just about its past. Today it’s a popular spot for rock climbers. Its cliffs provide some of Hong Kong’s best sport climbing. The island also has a designated campsite a peaceful place for those who wish to take a break and spend some time in nature. The Tung Lung Fort Special Area designated in 1979 is a nature reserve covering 3 hectares. In short a trip to Tung Lung Island provides history nature and an adventure all rolled into one.
