Dare to imagine life within those walls. Ricci Hall stands before us. It is more than just a dormitory. It’s a legacy of brotherhood and learning at the University of Hong Kong.

Ricci Hall’s story began in 1929. The Society of Jesus founded it. The Jesuits wanted a residence for students. It was especially for Catholic students from Wah Yan, La Salle and St. Joseph’s colleges.

The hall got its name from Matteo Ricci. He was an Italian Jesuit missionary. Ricci was known for his work in China. He bridged Eastern and Western cultures.

Originally, Ricci Hall was a beautiful old building. It had amazing harbour views. But in the early 1960s, it was too small. So it was rebuilt. The new Ricci Hall opened in 1967.

Ricci Hall has a special architectural design. Five blocks connect to encourage communication. There are 131 single rooms. Each has its own balcony. Sixteen corridors link the rooms.

Inside, you’ll find everything a student needs. There is a dining hall with three meals a day. Pantries sit at the end of each corridor. Drinking water is available 24 hours. A chapel offers a quiet space. There is also a sitting room. Two libraries provide study space. For recreation, there is a tennis court.

Ricci Hall isn’t just about academics. It aims to nurture the whole person. It helps students grow spiritually, intellectually and emotionally. Also socially, culturally and physically.

The motto of Ricci Hall is inspiring. “Quantum Potes Tantum Aude” It means: “As much as you are able, that you should dare to do.”

Brotherhood is key here. Residents strive for common goals. They improve together. They commit to each other. This creates a unique bond. It lasts a lifetime.

Ricci Spirit defines this brotherhood. It embodies unity, loyalty and sacrifice. These values shape the Riccian character. Students participate in sports and cultural events. They live by the Ricci Motto. They embrace values from past generations.

Once a Riccian, always a Riccian. Since 1929, Ricci Hall has produced leaders. They contribute to all areas of society. Here, boys become men. They learn treasured values. These include excellence, service, commitment and friendship.

Many prominent figures lived here. Frank Chan Fan is the Secretary for Transport and Housing. Linus Cheung Wing Lam is the ex-Chairman of Asia Television Limited. Harry Fang Sin Yang is a prominent orthopaedic surgeon. Sam Hui Koon-kit is a famous singer and actor. Martin Lee founded the Democratic Party.

Ricci Hall’s old boys often return. They share experiences with current students. They talk about their student lives. They offer guidance and support.

So, as we stand here, remember the legacy. Ricci Hall is a place of growth and brotherhood. It’s where students dare to achieve their best.
