Nativity Catholic Church has a rich history and a vibrant community. It stands as a testament to faith and service in the heart of Brandon.

In 1954 a group of determined Catholics petitioned Archbishop Joseph Hurley to establish a mission church. Their request was approved and the Mission of Nativity was born. Funds were quickly raised and land was purchased for the church’s location. The first Mass was celebrated on December 18 1955. This service was held in the building that now serves as the parish Social Hall.

The church experienced rapid growth and officially became a parish in May 1960. Soon after a parish school was established. A convent now the Church Office was built for the Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity. Later it housed the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

Msgr James Lara became pastor in 1969. For 30 years he oversaw significant growth. A new church chapel social hall and school expansions were constructed. The number of parishioners increased dramatically. Nativity became known for its many activities including the famous Novemberfest fall carnival.

Nativity established outreach ministries like the Food Bank and Pantry. They also created a mission in La Victoria Dominican Republic. The church’s ministries have grown to 68 strong meeting weekly.

From 2004 to 2014 Rev Arthur J Proulx led the transformation of Nativity. It became a modern stewardship parish. He oversaw new building projects including the Youth Center and Gymnasium. He also renovated the church. His work revitalized the community. His love for the poor helped thousands. Nativity became a beacon of the Catholic Church in central Florida.

Rev John Tapp became pastor at Christmas 2014. He continues to expand the church’s involvement in social justice ministries. He also works to renew the commitment to stewardship.

Nativity remains a vibrant place. Families of varying backgrounds experiences and ethnicities come together. They share their faith. Men and women young and old find a second home here. The parish community is described as caring diverse and offering something for everyone.
