How about a hike to the highest point in Sai Kung Peninsula? That is Shek Uk Shan. Today we will explore Shek Uk Shan. This peak stands at 481 meters. It offers stunning panoramic views.
Shek Uk Shan’s name translates to “Stone House Mountain”. This aptly describes its rugged terrain. Sai Kung Peninsula is beautiful. Shek Uk Shan is its crown.
The trail to Shek Uk Shan is known to be challenging. Unlike the popular Sharp Peak, Shek Uk Shan sees fewer hikers. The paths are often unpaved. Dense grasses and scrubs line the way. Junctions can be complicated. It is advisable to hike with experienced companions.
Our journey begins at Hoi Ha Road. We pass Lo Fu Kei Shek. From there, the path leads us toward Shek Uk Shan. Minibus number 7 will bring you close. Alight at the fire-lookout stop. You may need to remind the driver.
Follow the signs to the fire lookout. This is also the summit of Lo Fu Kei Shek. Return to the signpost after visiting the lookout. Then walk towards the “Road Closed” sign. This path leads to Shek Uk Shan.
The trail presents forks. Keep to the right side. Boulder piles mark the ridge. Take a moment to overlook Sharp Peak. The views are worth it.
Climbing to the summit of Shek Uk Shan, you will spot a signal station. This radio station sits atop the peak. The summit offers a grand view.
Walk along the signal station. The helispot provides another vantage point. Paths from the Shek Uk Shan summit lead to different locations. For a clearer route to Cheung Sheung, walk downhill near the trigonometrical stations.
Cheung Sheung offers a place to rest. There is even a store. Afterward, follow the Maclehose Trail Stage Three. This path leads to Pak Tam Au.
The trail to Ngam Tau Shan veers off to the left. This path is even more overgrown than Shek Uk Shan. Ribbons mark the way. Ngam Tau Shan runs parallel to the Maclehose Trail.
The summit of Ngam Tau Shan stands at 452 meters. After visiting Ngam Tau Shan, rejoin the Maclehose Trail. Follow the main path to Pak Tam Au. Finally, the hike concludes at Pak Tam Au.
Shek Uk Shan may not be easy. It offers an amazing panoramic view. You can see Ma On Shan. Plover Cove Reservoir is visible. Sharp Peak stands proudly. Sai Kung Port Shelter is also in view.
Remember to bring water and snacks. Wear appropriate clothing. Long pants and sleeves protect against scratches. Shek Uk Shan rewards the prepared.
