The Refuge Temple Church of the First Born is part of a unique lineage. Its roots trace back to the General Assembly and Church of the First Born. This fundamental faith healing sect emerged from a complex history. It’s linked to the Latter-Day Saints though it maintains its own identity. Many of its early members had previous connections to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The church’s structure is informal. There are elders deacons and baptized members. However there are no official membership registries. Their worship style is described as unprogrammed. The church’s origins are marked by key figures. John N Burton Elias Brewer and David T McDonald are among them. McDonald was baptized and ordained to preach around 1870. He was even reported to have raised the dead. He preached in Nebraska then Texas and finally Kansas. Burton’s name appears in a Latter-Day Saint newspaper in 1846. He was later denied membership in the LDS church. Brewer was one of the first people baptized by Burton. Brewer and McDonald’s daughter were married.

A revival in 1876 near Arkansas City Kansas led to the formation of a group known as “The Followers of Christ”. By 1880 hundreds of members were in Kansas. They met in homes and schoolhouses. This group later played a part in the Oklahoma land rush. General Marion Reece continued this work establishing churches in Oklahoma. The church’s history extends to Idaho Oregon and California. Other notable early preachers include the Parisho brothers and Jim Hays who is said to have baptized over 1000 people.

In 1918 elders from the church sought exemption from military service. They submitted Articles of Faith. These articles outline their beliefs. They emphasize faith in God Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They advocate for obedience to the Gospel and the importance of prophecy and revelation. They claim a right to peaceful worship.
