Beneath Cape Town lies a hidden world of water. The CoCT Aquifer Pump Station taps into this vital resource. This station is part of the City of Cape Town’s New Water Programme. This program aims to diversify the city’s water sources beyond rain-fed dams. The CoCT Aquifer Pump Station is crucial for drawing groundwater from the Cape Flats Aquifer. This aquifer stretches over 400 square kilometers. It helps supply Cape Town with much-needed water.

The process of groundwater abstraction involves drilling deep boreholes. Pumps are then fitted into these boreholes. These pumps bring the water to the surface. The water then undergoes filtration and treatment. It must meet national water standards before entering the city’s supply. This process helps ensure the water is safe and clean for consumption. This makes the CoCT Aquifer Pump Station a key player in Cape Town’s water management strategy.

The CoCT Aquifer Pump Station is specifically associated with the Cape Flats Aquifer Management Scheme (CFAMS). This scheme consists of five groups of boreholes. These groups are located in different areas: Strandfontein West, Strandfontein North and East, Philippi, Hanover Park, and Mitchells Plain. Because this area lacks dams, water from the CoCT Aquifer Pump Station and other boreholes is piped directly to the nearest treatment plants. The goal is to produce 50 million liters of water per day from these boreholes.

The City of Cape Town has invested heavily in these groundwater schemes. R390 million was invested in the previous financial year. A further R445 million was allocated for the 2024/25 financial year. This investment highlights the importance of groundwater in Cape Town’s water future. The CoCT Aquifer Pump Station symbolizes this commitment to water security. It showcases the innovative solutions being implemented to ensure a sustainable water supply for the city. The station is a testament to Cape Town’s efforts to adapt to climate change and population growth. It stands as a reminder of the hidden resources beneath our feet.
