Nestled on the University of British Columbia campus, St. Mark’s Parish stands as a beacon of faith amidst the bustle of academic life. The parish, originally named St. Ignatius of Antioch, was founded in 1967 by Archbishop Martin Johnson. It had no permanent church location and services were originally held in St. Anselm’s Anglican Church. The parish was later hosted by St. Mark’s College, a Roman Catholic theological college affiliated with the University. In 1998, St. Mark’s College built a new chapel which soon became the home of St. Ignatius Parish. The parish hosted Sunday Mass in the chapel, and Fr. Leo Klosterman, the college’s registrar, was also the parish priest. In 2007, the Jesuits took over the parish administration. Under the leadership of Fr. Jim Sheppard, the parish decided to change its name to St. Mark’s Parish and to dedicate the chapel as a church. The church was officially named The Parish of St. Mark in January 2012. Today, St. Mark’s Parish continues to serve the University of British Columbia community, providing a space for students, faculty, and local residents to connect with their faith.
