Envision Turin in 1901. Michele Raby commissioned Pietro Fenoglio to design a private residence. This is Villino Raby. Fenoglio collaborated with Gottardo Gussoni on this project. Villino Raby stands as a testament to Turin’s Liberty style.
Located on Corso Francia, Villino Raby showcases a blend of Belgian and French Art Nouveau influences. The original design saw alterations during construction. Gussoni primarily modified the wrought iron, balustrades, and the large bay window. This explains the height variation. Gussoni’s influence appears in the numerous decorative elements that link to his signature neobaroque designs. It is comparable to Villa Scott.
The plan of Villino Raby is asymmetrical. It features an array of interconnected structures. Notable elements include a large bay window. The entrance and a veranda with a terrace add to its charm. A short staircase connects the veranda to the garden.
Inside Villino Raby, Domenico Smeriglio created decorations. He later worked with Fenoglio for the 1902 Exhibition. He also worked for the church of Santa Elisabetta. Ciravegna crafted the original glass of the bay window.
The wrought iron railing of the internal staircase is remarkable. Mazzuccotelli created it. Its intricate design extends to the base lamp and the entrance chandelier. Originally, an ornate gate surrounded the structure. Only the driveway gate’s decor remains. In the inner courtyard sits a building that once housed the stables. Smeriglio frescoed the sketches of the decorative band with horses under the eaves of the stables. Gussoni created the artificial stone decorations.
Villino Raby served as a home initially. It became a private school in the 1980s. The Order of Doctors and Dentists of Turin acquired it in 2004. They meticulously restored it. Since 2011, it has been their official headquarters. The restoration was completed between 2012 and 2013.
