The bright yellow school building, with its cheerful facade and spacious playground, stands as a testament to a dream. Michelle McLean School in Otjomuise, Windhoek, is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a beacon of hope for the children of the community. A symbol of hope, a symbol of opportunity, and a symbol of the remarkable legacy of Michelle McLean, Namibia’s first Miss Universe.
This school, inaugurated by none other than the President of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma, opened its doors in 2001. It was a joint venture between the Michelle McLean Children’s Trust and the Ministry of Basic Education. From its humble beginnings, the school has grown to serve over 900 learners from Grades 1 to 7.
Michelle McLean’s vision for this school was to bridge the gap in education. It provided much-needed access to quality education for children in the Otjomuise community who previously walked long distances to reach other schools. This was a great achievement for the community. The Michelle McLean Children’s Trust, through its founder, Michelle McLean, played a crucial role in establishing the school, ensuring its continuous operation, and working hard to improve the learning conditions further.
The first phase of the school included classrooms, a library, a place of assembly, administrative offices, ablution blocks, and even a residence for the caretaker. This commitment to providing holistic support for the students has been ongoing. The school’s second phase, established in 2004, added three more classrooms and an additional ablution block.
Michelle McLean’s dedication to the school is evident in her numerous visits to the school, inspiring students and sharing her journey to success. The school, with its vibrant atmosphere and dedicated teachers, offers a space of learning, growth, and development for the children of Otjomuise.
This is Michelle McLean School. An embodiment of the belief that education can pave the way for a brighter future. Here children find not just knowledge but also a sense of community and hope.
