It holds a peony stem gently in its mouth. There’s also a phoenix its wings spread wide. Four panels depict birds and flowers. The temple’s garden offers respite even in winter. I imagine it’s breathtaking in spring summer and autumn. The temple’s serene atmosphere offers a welcome contrast to the bustling city life. Jounji Temple is a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese art and culture. It’s a place to find peace and appreciate the artistry of the carvings. The shishi the phoenix and the floral panels all speak to a rich artistic tradition. This small temple in Machida is a true treasure. It’s a place where the ancient and modern worlds intertwine.
