In 628 AD two brothers found a statue. This wasn’t just any statue. It was a golden Kannon a Buddhist goddess of mercy. This discovery is what started Sensoji Temple. We stand before Sensoji Temple today Tokyo’s oldest temple.

The brothers Hinokuma and Hamanari Takenari were fishing. They found the statue in the Sumida River. They tried to throw it back but it kept resurfacing. This was seen as a miracle. It showed Kannon’s blessing. The legend spread quickly. Villagers started worshipping the statue at one brother’s home.

For over a thousand years people visited this humble shrine. Then in 645 AD a bigger temple was built. This replaced the older home shrine. Sensoji Temple the grand temple we see today wasn’t always so grand. It too faced destruction. World War II saw it destroyed. But like the miraculous statue it was rebuilt.

Look around you. Notice the Kaminarimon Gate. This is the Thunder Gate. Its giant red lantern is iconic. The characters on it represent Asakusa and Tokyo. This gate is newer than some parts of Sensoji Temple. It was built in 1618. This is much later than the temple’s original construction.

Nearby is the Niomon Gate or Hozomon Gate. This was originally built in 942. It’s faced damage and rebuilding. It stands as a testament to Sensoji’s enduring spirit. Beyond the gates lies the main hall. It’s dedicated to Kannon. It houses a stately five-story pagoda. This temple also hosts Sanja Matsuri one of Tokyo’s largest festivals. This festival celebrates Kannon the brothers and the temple’s founder.

The area around Sensoji Temple wasn’t always bustling. It was once a grassland. The temple’s establishment changed all that. Asakusa developed into a lively trading and pilgrimage centre. Sensoji Temple remained its heart. The temple suffered fires and natural disasters. Yet it was repeatedly rebuilt. Its Main Hall survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. But the firebombing of Tokyo in 1945 destroyed everything. Its reconstruction after the war was a rebirth for Tokyo.

Today Sensoji Temple welcomes millions of visitors each year. They come to experience its history and beauty. They witness its enduring resilience. They participate in its traditions like coin tossing. This act isn’t just about luck. It’s about casting away impurities. The temple absorbs your worries leaving you free. Experience Sensoji Temple’s enduring magic for yourselves. Let its story inspire you. It is more than just a temple. It is a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Tokyo.
