Kasama Inari-jinja Shrine was founded in 651 during Emperor Kotoku’s reign. The shrine is dedicated to Ukanomitama no kami. This spirit has jurisdiction over the five grains and foodstuffs. Ukanomitama no kami is the life-root kami. The kami has mastery over the sources of life itself. Uka means foodstuffs. It indicates the mysterious spirit dwelling in the grain.

During the Edo period, the feudal lord of the Kasama Domain supported Kasama Inari-jinja Shrine. Its influence spread throughout Japan. Today, over 3.5 million pilgrims visit each year. They come to honor this ancient shrine.

The main hall of Kasama Inari-jinja Shrine is an important cultural property. It was rebuilt in the late Edo period. The roof is finished with copper tiles. Inside the main shrine, elaborate sculptures can be found. The Santo Happounirami no zu depicts a three-headed dragon. It seems to stare at the viewer from everywhere. Ranteikyokusui-zu is another beautiful sculpture crafted by a master’s hands.

Two wisteria trees stand near Romon Gate. They are 400 years old. These wisteria are designated as a natural monument of the prefecture. In May, beautiful flowers bloom on these trees. One is the double-layered wisteria. The other wisteria’s length is about 150 cm. Their dark purple flowers and gentle aroma attract many visitors.

Speaking of Inari shrines, it is all about the fox. Many foxes reside in the precincts of Kasama Inari-jinja Shrine. The Kitsune-zuka, or fox mounds, are behind the main shrine. People place fox statues here to fulfill their wishes. Shiroyamainari Shrine is another sacred spot.

Kasama Inari-jinja Shrine is also known for the Kasama Chrysanthemum Festival. It is considered Japan’s oldest Chrysanthemum Festival. The festival takes place every year from late October to late November. During this time, the city is decorated with beautiful chrysanthemums.

Near Kasama Inari-jinja Shrine is Monzen-dori Street. Since ancient times, it has been lined with businesses. Here you can taste local specialties like Kasama Inari Sushi. This sushi has vinegared rice wrapped in fried tofu. Some shops add chestnuts or soba noodles.
