Is it just me or does this cross seem like a silent guardian? Welcome near the Croce del Parco dell’Arrivore. We stand at a point where history and nature intertwine. This park tells a story of transformation.

The Parco dell’Arrivore itself was inaugurated October 7 2009. It was part of the “Torino Città d’Acque” project. The park sits on the right bank of the Stura stream. It is a revitalized area with natural beauty.

Let’s delve into the history. An ancient Roman road once ran near here. It connected Borgo Dora to Strada dell’Arrivore. A wooden Roman bridge crossed the Stura. It was used until the mid-12th century. After the bridge collapsed a ferry service was established. Monks from the Abbadia of San Giacomo managed it. This place was called Porto di Leinì.

In the 18th century the road became the Reale Strada di Chivasso. It led towards Casale and Milan. This route was important until 1874. That year the Amedeo VIII bridge was built. Traffic shifted to the new road. The ferry and Porto di Leinì fell into disuse.

The area’s landscape features are noteworthy. The river and its banks form an ecological corridor. Many birds frequent this area. A wetland area preserves biodiversity. The edge of the natural terrace offers panoramic views. You can see the Alps and Turin’s hills. The Basilica di Superga is a point of interest.

Botanical improvements included planting 3000 native plants. Poplars willows and maples were planted. A 2000 square meter wetland was created. This protects birds and biodiversity. The park is rich with low environmental impact. It integrates with the area’s natural features.

Children helped design the park. They expressed their ideas for play areas. The park includes urban gardens managed by Circoscrizione 6. There is a cycle path and picnic area. Sports facilities include volleyball and soccer fields. The play area features wooden structures. These are made from robinia wood.

The area changed over time. Until the mid-1960s fields were cultivated here. The Stura riverbanks were popular for outings. Restaurants began to appear. Later the area became industrialized. Gravel was extracted from the riverbed. Evidence of this remains.

As gravel extraction declined the area degraded. Illegal activities started. In the early 1980s cleanup efforts began. The Circoscrizione citizens and the Brigata Alpina Taurinense collaborated. This was the first step in creating the park. It extends along the Stura’s banks.

Today the Parco dell’Arrivore is a testament to recovery. It showcases the potential of natural and historical resources. The Croce del Parco dell’Arrivore stands as a reminder. It watches over this revitalized landscape. It connects us to the area’s past.
