As the saying goes, “good things come to those who wait.” That certainly rings true for Knox United Church. While today it stands proudly on Balaclava Street, its journey began miles away in the heart of Kerrisdale. In 1910, Kerrisdale was a budding community longing for a spiritual home. A young student minister, Mr. David Gray, answered that call. He held the first services in a family home on Wilson Road, eventually securing a temporary haven in the Wilson Road Public School. The congregation, initially known as Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church, quickly adopted the name Knox Presbyterian Church, paying homage to the influential Scottish reformer, John Knox. The church thrived, moving to a larger space on West 42nd Avenue in 1911. However, fate, in the form of the United Church of Canada’s formation in 1925, prompted another move. Knox found its forever home on Balaclava Street in 1948. This beautiful sanctuary, a testament to enduring faith and community, has welcomed generations ever since. Knox United Church stands as a symbol of resilience, a beacon of hope, and a testament to the power of community in shaping Vancouver’s spiritual landscape.
