Gazing across Sydney Harbour, did you ever imagine this tranquil oasis, Balls Head Reserve, once echoed with the clang of industry? Balls Head Reserve, a mere 1.5 kilometers west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, rests peacefully between Berrys Bay and Balls Head Bay. Named after Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball of First Fleet fame, this haven offers a stark contrast to its bustling neighbor. Long before European arrival, the Cammeraygal people called this place Yerroulbine, leaving behind their legacy in the form of middens, art sites, and rock engravings. These whispers of the past intertwine with the more recent history of Balls Head Reserve. Poet Henry Lawson immortalized this area in his verse, even penning a protest poem against a proposed coal depot in 1916, “The Sacrifice of Balls Head”. Despite Lawson’s plea, the Coal Loader was built by 1920, a testament to the changing times. Thankfully, public outcry and the efforts of individuals like Premier Jack Lang ensured that Balls Head Reserve was proclaimed a public reserve in 1926. Though much of the original forest Lawson described was lost, the spirit of conservation prevailed. A Beautification Committee, led by Walter Froggatt, diligently replanted native trees throughout the 1930s, many sourced from the Royal Botanic Gardens. Today, thanks to these dedicated efforts, Balls Head Reserve thrives. The reserve, managed by North Sydney Council, boasts a network of walking trails, some even wheelchair accessible. As you explore, you’ll discover remnants of the Depression era, including old paths, steps, and railings, a poignant reminder of challenging times. Look closer and you might find Aboriginal waterholes and grinding grooves, echoes of a much older history. Amidst the Sydney red gums, Port Jackson cypress, and blueberry ash, you might spot some of the diverse fauna that call Balls Head Reserve home. Birdsong fills the air, while reptiles, flying foxes, microbats, and marsupials rustle in the undergrowth. From its industrial past to its vibrant present, Balls Head Reserve remains a testament to the power of conservation and community. As you leave this urban oasis, carry with you the echoes of its rich history and the tranquility of its natural beauty.
