Listen closely. Did you know that the Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine also called Numabukuro Hikawa Jinja is more than just a place of worship? It is a vibrant hub of community and tradition.

Let me introduce you to the Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine. It stands proudly in Nakano City Tokyo. This Shinto shrine has been a cornerstone of the Numabukuro district for centuries. Locals also call it Numabukuro Hikawa Jinja.

The story of Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine begins in the Nanboku-cho period. That was between 1346 and 1370. It started when the Hikawa Shrine in Omiya present-day Saitama City shared its spirit. This act established a new sacred space in Numabukuro.

Legend says that Ota Dokan a military commander visited this shrine. He prayed for victory during a battle against the Toyoshima clan. He even planted a cedar tree to commemorate his prayers. The cedar grew tall reaching 30 meters. People called it Dokan-sugi. Sadly the tree died in 1942. Only its stump remains today.

The main deity enshrined here is Susanoo-no-Mikoto. He is known for his strength and protection against evil. People seek his blessings for expelling misfortune. They also pray for success in academics. The shrine has a rich history marked by both destruction and renewal. In 1990 a fire tragically burned down the main hall. This was due to a radical group’s arson. But the community rebuilt it in 1991.

Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine hosts many festivals throughout the year. The grand festival in August is a highlight. People celebrate with traditional dances. They also enjoy the lively atmosphere. The shrine is also known as a spiritual spot for warding off evil. It blesses the area.

Notably the shrine has gained popularity as a pilgrimage site. It is featured in popular manga and anime. This brings a new wave of visitors eager to connect with its cultural significance. The shrine is also associated with the Tokyo Revengers manga. It is believed to be the model for the shrine that appears in the manga.

Adding to its charm Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine features the Nakano Seven Lucky Gods. All seven deities are together. This is unique to Nakano. Each god has a stone monument describing their origin and blessings. It is a rare opportunity to see all seven in one place.

As you explore the grounds you might notice the Chikaraishi or power stones. These stones were used in strength tests by young men during festivals. Lifting heavier stones was a rite of passage. This showed their strength and community recognition.

Don’t miss the Sanbon-negai-Matsu. It is a three-trunk pine tree believed to be around 650 years old. Touching this tree is said to bring good fortune.

The Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine connects the past with the present. It offers solace blessings and a vibrant cultural experience. Take a moment to appreciate its serene beauty and the stories it holds. The Numabukuro Hikawa Shrine remains a treasured landmark. It represents faith community and enduring traditions.
