Etched in the heart of Arlington National Cemetery stands the Argonne Cross. Its silent vigil speaks volumes. A 13-foot tall Latin cross of Vermont marble. It’s a memorial unlike any other.

This isn’t just a monument. It’s a testament to the sacrifice of American soldiers. They fought in France during World War I. Specifically the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. A brutal battle lasting from September 26th to November 11th 1918. The cross was erected on November 13th 1923. A year after Armistice Day. The Argonne Unit of the American Women’s Legion spearheaded its creation. These women were mothers wives daughters sisters. They were next-of-kin to veterans. They channeled their grief into action. They built this moving tribute.

The Argonne Cross cost $2500. That’s over $45000 today. The cross depicts an eagle with outstretched wings. It clutches a wreath. The symbol is carved where the arms meet. Originally nineteen pine trees surrounded it. These trees came from the Argonne Forest itself. They served as a powerful symbol. Sadly most are gone now. Replaced with a smaller grove.

The inscriptions tell a story. The front reads IN MEMORY OF OUR MEN IN FRANCE 1917-1918. The back reveals the cross’s origins. ERECTED THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE ARGONNE UNIT AMERICAN WOMEN’S LEGION. These words echo the dedication and resilience of these women. The women wanted to honor the 2100 American soldiers. Their remains were reinterred in Section 18 of Arlington.

The Argonne Cross isn’t just stone and marble. It embodies the enduring spirit of remembrance. It stands as a poignant reminder of the cost of war. Yet it’s also a powerful testament to the enduring strength of remembrance. The unwavering dedication of the American Women’s Legion lives on in this hallowed space. Remember this moving memorial. Reflect on the sacrifices it represents. Feel the profound silence. Let the story of the Argonne Cross resonate deeply within you.
