Michael who? That’s what you might be thinking as you stand before the impressive facade of the Fuchsenfeldhof. This grand municipal housing complex, built between 1922 and 1925, owes its curious name to a former establishment – the “Gasthaus zum Fuchsen” (Fox Inn). This inn, owned by one Michael Fuchs, lent its name to the surrounding meadows, known then as Fuchsenfeld, or “fox field”. The Fuchsenfeldhof stands as a testament to Vienna’s “Red Vienna” era, a time of immense social and cultural change. This was when the city embarked on a mission to provide affordable, modern housing for working-class families. Constructed using funds from the newly introduced housing tax, the Fuchsenfeldhof was among the first wave of these pioneering projects. Look around you. This complex, a miniature city within a city, is comprised of four courtyards, each with its own character and charm. Hidden within these courtyards are delightful details: a beautiful fountain adorned with a fox’s head, whimsical sculptures of children playing music, even remnants of a former wading pool that transformed into an ice rink in winter. While you won’t find foxes roaming the grounds today, the Fuchsenfeldhof echoes with the spirit of Michael Fuchs and the vision of a city that dared to dream of better housing for all.
