Gazing up at this granite obelisk you are seeing a tribute to a hero. This is the Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki. It stands as a powerful reminder of a priest’s sacrifice. It commemorates his courage during a pivotal moment in Polish history.

Let’s delve into the story of Ignacy Skorupka. We will uncover why this monument stands in his honor. The Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki marks the legacy of a man. He died defending his homeland.

Ignacy Skorupka was a chaplain. He served the 236th Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Academic Legion. This legion comprised mainly young students. They were eager to defend Warsaw against the approaching Bolsheviks. Skorupka volunteered to join their ranks.

Tragically on August 14 1920, Skorupka’s life was cut short. He was killed in the battle of Ossów. A shot to the head took his life as he ministered to a wounded soldier. This battle marked the first defeat of the Red Army in the Battle of Warsaw.

The death of Ignacy Skorupka became a symbol. It represented the spirit of the Battle of Warsaw. Legend says he mobilized wavering soldiers. He led them to attack with a cross in hand. He marched towards certain death. This image captured the hearts and minds of the Polish people.

The Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki was erected in 1939. It stands near the house where Skorupka’s body was taken after the battle. General Mieczysław Trojanowski unveiled the monument. Bishop Józef Gawlina celebrated the field mass.

The monument itself is a simple obelisk. It rests on a quadrilateral granite pedestal. A metal cross, the Polish emblem, and the Virtuti Militari Order adorn it. Flagpoles, information boards, and benches complete the setting.

The Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki has undergone renovations over the years. Marian Jeznach a veteran of the Polish-Bolshevik war helped with the renovations. In 2017 the Local Government Cultural Institution helped as well. The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage also helped.

Today the Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki remains a significant landmark. It is part of the cultural park “Ossów – Gate of the Battle of Warsaw 1920”. This park includes other historical sites. These sites are a chapel, a war cemetery and several crosses.

Every year on August 15th anniversary celebrations take place here. Historical reenactments occur with the army’s participation. The Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki stands on the “Warsaw Battle Route”. It connects eleven villages.

As you stand before the Obelisk Księdza Ignacego Skorupki remember Ignacy Skorupka’s sacrifice. He died defending Poland’s independence. His story embodies courage faith and love for country. The monument preserves his memory for generations.
