A century of thirst quenched here. This is the Wasserwerk Westhoven. Right before you stands a testament to Cologne’s ingenuity. Built between 1903 and 1904 this waterworks wasn’t just any building. It was a solution. A response to past contamination issues plaguing other Cologne waterworks. This location two kilometers from the nearest town and one kilometer from the Rhine was strategically chosen. This ensured the purest water supply possible for Porz.
The Wasserwerk Westhoven is more than just pipes and pumps. It’s a solid structure. It boasts beautiful romanizing elements. Think large windows. Stone gable decorations adorn the brick facade. It’s a stunning example of industrial architecture. An adjoining half-timbered house once served as employee housing. Though damaged in WWII it was later rebuilt. Simpler yet it stands as a reminder of the lives intertwined with this vital building.
The Wasserwerk Westhoven saw significant changes in the late 1980s. The need for large activated carbon filters required expansion. Instead of a traditional extension a sleek steel and glass structure was built. This houses the modern water treatment facilities. The original pump station remains in the historic building. Clever design right? A blend of old and new.
Simultaneously a water education trail was created on the site. The Wasserwerk Westhoven is now a valuable outdoor classroom. Kids learn about water conservation and treatment. This fascinating location also became a part of the Wasserschule Koln.
Since November 10 1995 the Wasserwerk Westhoven has been a protected landmark. It’s more than just a functional building. It’s a piece of Cologne’s history. Initially it served Porz. Today it supplies the northern parts of Cologne. Water from deep wells is combined with 10% Rhine river water. A clever mix. This increases the water volume and ensures water quality.
The pumping capacity has increased dramatically. From 600 cubic meters per hour in its early days to 3500 cubic meters per hour today. Modern technology and clever planning. The Wasserwerk Westhoven. A symbol of progress. A monument to clean water. A vital part of Cologne’s infrastructure.
