Can you imagine a place where once stood only five houses, and these houses were all inns catering to weary travelers? You are standing right in front of Rustendorf, one of the oldest parts of Vienna’s 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. This small village existed as early as 1394, but it wasn’t until a few centuries later, 1771, that it actually became a place where people lived. You can see remains of that time in several streets with the names “Reichsapfelgasse” and “Mondscheingasse.” The most famous local inn was called “Zum goldenen Mondschein.” It was the most coveted spot in Vienna. It even had a crescent moon on its coat of arms! Today, Rustendorf is a quiet and charming neighborhood, but it is the heart of this diverse district. It remembers a time when people traveled by horse and cart. In the 19th century, its central position became a place for industrial use and an influx of people. In 1938, Rustendorf became part of the 15th district, alongside Braunhirschen and Reindorf. Today, you can still find traces of the old Rustendorf in the houses here, and with a bit of imagination, you can almost hear the clang of horses’ hooves on the cobblestones and the chatter of travelers in the inns.
