Think of a life that started in England in 1793. That’s where our story of the Francis Bradey Family Grave begins.

Here lies Francis Bradey. He wasn’t just any settler. He was the grandson of a former Chancellor of Ireland. He joined the Royal Artillery in 1812. Seven years later, he obtained his discharge.

Francis Bradey arrived in Wellington on the ‘Adelaide’ in 1840. He came with his wife, Keturah Ross and their five daughters. More sons would follow later. Tragedy struck that same year. Francis survived a boat accident off Petone Beach. Nine others drowned. He only lost his luggage.

Francis Bradey bought land in Wellington. He had interests in Section 489. It was between Lambton Quay and The Terrace. He also purchased 2,000 acres at Duck Creek in Pauatahanui.

Bradey was a man of standing in Wellington. He attended events like the “Tee-Totallers” gathering in 1843. He celebrated Queen Victoria’s birthday in 1849. In 1856, he went to a dinner for his election to the Provincial Council. He even sang “His Excellency” at the celebration. He was also a captain in the New Zealand military.

After his death in 1864, Francis Bradey was buried here. This hill was named Mt Pleasant. It overlooked his Duck Creek farm. His military service was honored. His body was carried on a gun carriage from Wellington. The journey took two days.

Timber from the Duck Creek land built Old St Paul’s. Hurley and Carter operated the timber mill. The Bradey family farmed this land until the 1960s.

Keturah Ross Bradey joined her husband here in 1888. She died at the age of 84. Their daughters were buried elsewhere. The Bradey land eventually became part of Whitby.

This Francis Bradey Family Grave is a reminder. It reminds us of the early settlers. It reminds us of their contributions to this land. The Bradey family left their mark. Places like Bradey’s Bay still bear their name. The family’s original boat, “Winsome,” is still used today.

Take a moment to appreciate this quiet place. It is a testament to a family’s legacy. It stands in the heart of what was once their farm. It’s a peaceful spot to reflect on history.
