A weary hunchback bears the weight of history. This is Il Gobbo di Rialto. He isn’t just a statue. He’s a silent witness to centuries of Venetian life.

Carved from marble by Pietro da Salò in 1541 Il Gobbo di Rialto stands opposite the Church of San Giacomo di Rialto. He’s more than a hunchback. He’s a crouching figure supporting a small flight of steps. These steps led to a platform. From this platform officials proclaimed decrees and sentences.

Imagine the scene. A crier stands on the steps above Il Gobbo. His voice booms across the Rialto market. He reads the latest laws of the Venetian Republic. He announces punishments for minor offenses.

The punishment? A naked run through the streets. From Piazza San Marco all the way to the Rialto. The final act? A humiliating kiss to Il Gobbo himself.

Time wore down the statue. By the 19th century Il Gobbo needed repair. Civic funds paid for its restoration in 1836. A Latin inscription marks the date. It reads “The rock for declaring the republic’s laws restored by public money in the year 1836.”

Il Gobbo wasn’t alone in his role. He corresponded with Pasquino a talking statue in Rome. They exchanged satirical comments on the Venetian Republic. They even gossiped about Pope Paul V.

Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice may have been inspired by Il Gobbo. The characters Launcelot Gobbo and his father Old Gobbo share a similar symbolic weight.

Today Il Gobbo stands as a symbol of Venice’s history. He’s a reminder of the Republic’s power. He’s a testament to the city’s enduring spirit. He’s more than just a statue. He’s a piece of Venice’s soul. He invites us to reflect on Venice’s past its vibrant present and its uncertain future.
