“A Roman sarcophagus holding the remains of Saint Albertus Magnus rests here” A whisper of history hangs heavy in the air. This is St Andreas in Cologne a remarkable Romanesque church. For nearly a thousand years it has stood witness to Cologne’s vibrant past. Archbishop Gero consecrated this very spot in 974. He dedicated it to Saint Andrew. Though an earlier church here was dedicated to Saint Matthew.

St Andreas wasn’t always what you see today. It was rebuilt in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. The great fire of Cologne in 1220 likely hastened its completion. Notice the blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The rich ornamentation of the Romanesque period sits beside the simpler elegance of Gothic additions. Centuries of alterations and redesign shaped the church. This unique blend creates a captivating journey through time.

The crypt is a must-see. It holds a Roman sarcophagus from the 3rd century. Inside lie the remains of the 13th-century theologian and philosopher Saint Albertus Magnus. His presence is palpable. The crypt was filled in the 14th century. It wasn’t rediscovered until after World War II. The Dominican Order has ministered to St Andreas since 1947. They expanded the crypt creating a tomb chapel for Saint Albertus Magnus.

But St Andreas is more than just ancient stones and hallowed ground. Look closely. You’ll notice the stunning modern stained-glass windows. Markus Lüpertz a renowned contemporary artist created these windows between 2005 and 2010. His breathtaking designs add a vibrant contemporary dimension. They tell stories of the Passion of Christ the martyrdom of the Maccabees and the life of Albertus Magnus. More windows are planned. They will bring the narrative to life even further.

In the entrance hall you will see a 16th-century fountain. Legend says it once collected the blood of Saint Ursula’s eleven thousand virgins. It’s a macabre footnote to the church’s rich history. St Andreas is a treasure trove of art and history. The choir stalls dating from around 1430 are among Cologne’s most significant medieval works. Look for the wooden figure of Saint Christopher and the Rosary Madonna triptych. These are masterpieces from the workshops of renowned artists. The gilded Maccabee Shrine is another highlight. Its relief panels depict biblical scenes.

St Andreas is more than a church. It’s a living testament to faith art and resilience. It stands as a symbol of Cologne’s enduring spirit. A place where history and modernity meet in captivating harmony. Leave St Andreas with a deeper appreciation for this remarkable landmark. A place that truly transcends time.
