“Lost?” a voice echoed through the cavernous construction site. We’re standing at the precipice of what will soon be Estação Itaberaba – Hospital Vila Penteado. Estação Itaberaba will be a crucial station on São Paulo’s Metro Line 6-Orange, and it’s already breaking records. Scheduled to open in mid-2026, Estação Itaberaba will plunge an astounding 67 meters below street level. This depth surpasses all other stations in São Paulo and across Latin America, dethroning Estação Higienópolis–Mackenzie after the shield’s passage in September 2024. Imagine descending into this subterranean world. The trip down will be a journey in itself. Estação Itaberaba’s depth is a testament to engineering ingenuity. It needs to navigate beneath the Rio Tietê and other existing metro tunnels. The station’s location at the intersection of Avenida Itaberaba and Avenida Ministro Petrônio Portela will provide three access points. One near Sonda Supermercado on Avenida Itaberaba, another on Rua Amaro Rodrigues, and a third on Avenida Ministro Petrônio Portela. This last entrance will serve the nearby Hospital Geral de Vila Penteado and CEU Freguesia do Ó. Estação Itaberaba’s story began in December 2015, with an initial completion date set for mid-2021. Delays, including a year-long hold-up in funding from Caixa Econômica Federal for expropriations, pushed the opening back. Construction paused again in September 2016 due to the involvement of construction companies in Operation Car Wash. The project was revitalized in 2020 with the sale of the Move SP consortium to Acciona. The current completion date is set for 2025, with the opening slated for 2026. When completed, Estação Itaberaba will be an underground marvel. The platforms will be lateral, featuring exposed concrete structures and support rooms at surface level. The station will also be fully accessible to people with disabilities. Estação Itaberaba, named for its location and proximity to the hospital, aims to enhance connectivity between the area’s main avenues. This station represents more than just a stop on the metro line. It represents the culmination of years of planning, engineering prowess, and a commitment to improving São Paulo’s transportation infrastructure.
