Perhaps you have heard of someone who dedicated their life to special education. That someone is Maria Grzegorzewska. We are standing in Warsaw. I want to tell you about this Polish educator who changed the lives of disabled children.
Maria Grzegorzewska brought special education to Poland. She was born in 1887. Her parents instilled in her a sense of humanitarianism. Maria’s early education was in clandestine schools. These schools taught Polish culture because Russian educators were not allowed to. She later studied in Lithuania. Then, Maria attended Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
In 1913, she went to Brussels to study at the International Paedological Faculty. World War I interrupted her studies. Maria earned her PhD from the Sorbonne in 1916. After Poland regained independence in 1918, Maria returned. She wanted to create programs for disabled children. She also wanted educational reforms to improve their lives.
Maria Grzegorzewska began working for the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education in 1919. She established facilities for disabled children. She founded schools for special education. Additionally, she created training programs for teachers. Her curriculum was implemented at the State Institute of Special Education in 1922. Maria directed this institute from its founding until she died.
During World War II, Maria worked as a nurse. She was active in the Polish resistance. Also, she joined Żegota. This organization provided assistance to Jews. After the war in 1945, Maria reopened the Special Education Institute. Graduate courses were introduced within five years.
In 1950, the school was renamed the State College of Special Education. A state curricula was introduced during the Stalinist era. Maria fought against this program. She wanted to protect special education. After 1956, the institute regained governmental support. It reverted to its original name. Maria was a full professor at the University of Warsaw between 1957 and 1960.
Maria Grzegorzewska’s work was honored with awards. She died in 1967. She was buried in the Powązki Cemetery. This is the Avenue of the Meritorious. Maria is remembered as the founder of special education in Poland. The Maria Grzegorzewska University is named in her honor. It was formerly the State Institute of Special Education that she founded.
Grzegorzewska’s method took a holistic approach. It addressed care and barriers to functioning. It also focused on social integration. Her methods included socio-professional development. This interdisciplinary stance looked at the needs of the person. It did not focus on perceived defects. Her work changed how educators thought. They shifted from treating disabilities to meeting individual needs.
Two monuments stand in tribute to Maria Grzegorzewska. One is near a school in Poznań. The other is in Kurzeszyn near her birthplace. A museum dedicated to her is located in the main building of the Maria Grzegorzewska University. You can visit it to learn more about her life.
Maria Grzegorzewska’s legacy lives on. Her work continues to inspire educators. She showed the importance of valuing every individual.
