“Faith before time poured this blood here” This inscription on the Blutsaüle Blood Column at St Gereon in Cologne echoes through centuries. St Gereon is more than a church. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and remarkable history. Built on the site where Saint Gereon a Roman soldier from Egypt was martyred in the 3rd century this church stands as a beacon. Its unique decagonal shape is reminiscent of the Minerva Medica in Rome.

The original church built around 380 AD was oval shaped. This shape is reflected in the current structure. Construction of the present Romanesque building began in 1067. The second level and the impressive dome were completed in 1227. The dome is truly awe inspiring. It’s the largest dome built in the West between the Hagia Sophia and the Duomo in Florence. Imagine the skill and dedication required to build such a structure centuries ago.

The exterior of St Gereon is striking. Two square east towers flank the apse. Just outside in a small park is a striking sculpture. This sculpted head of the decapitated St Gereon is a modern addition created in 2002. Ancient foundations west of the church hint at the building’s deep roots.

Step inside through the north door of the west porch. Notice the two side chapels. The larger right chapel from 1897 features a Pieta. This sculpture is inspired by Michelangelo’s masterpiece in St Peter’s. Look up at the apse vault. Its painted cross and vines are reminiscent of Ravenna’s mosaic churches.

Just outside this chapel is a Burial of Christ sculpture group from the early 1500s. The vibrant colors it once boasted are sadly faded. Above the main church entrance is a mural. This mural depicts Christ with St Helen and St Gereon. The inscription below dates from the 17th century. It mentions the martyrs Gereon and Gregor Maurus along with their companions.

The decagonal nave is breathtaking. Small radiating chapels line its walls. The red painted dome towers above. It’s 34.55 meters high at its apex. The impressive dome measures 21 meters long and 16.9 meters wide. Look for the Blutsaüle. It’s a section of an ancient granite column in a niche. This relic bears witness to the martyr’s blood spilled on this sacred ground.

Explore further. The baptistery holds 13th-century murals of saints. The chancel elevated above the nave unfortunately isn’t typically accessible. However the apse vault’s Romanesque mural of Christ in Judgment is visible. The symbols of the Evangelists Mark and Luke flank Christ.

Descent into the large crypt built in two sections. The older western part contains the Confessio. It is marked by a large stone sarcophagus stacked on two smaller ones. Above is a mural of the Crucifixion. The Virgin Mary St John St Gereon and St Helena are depicted. The eastern crypt’s vault is decorated with Romanesque murals of saints. The floor features remarkably well preserved Romanesque mosaics. They depict scenes from the Old Testament.

St Gereon’s story is one of faith resilience and unwavering devotion. It’s a place where history echoes in the stones. It’s a place where you can feel the weight of centuries and the enduring power of faith. The basilica was elevated to Minor Basilica status by the Pope in 1920. It sustained damage in World War II. However it was remarkably well preserved compared to many other buildings. St Gereon stands proudly restored a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture.
