Is it possible for a building to hold centuries of stories within its walls? Here, before us, stands Haus Blegge, a testament to time and change. Don’t be fooled by its current peaceful facade, for this place has witnessed quite a journey. Originally known as Haus Blech, this grand estate started as a fortified castle, a refuge in turbulent times. Its origins date back to the 12th century, far earlier than its current baroque appearance suggests. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of knights, nobles, and even a kalkfabrikant.

In the 18th century, Johann Jakob Bützler, a prominent kalkfabrikant, acquired the estate. He shaped Haus Blegge into what we see today, a beautiful example of baroque architecture. He preserved the surrounding moat, a reminder of its defensive past. One particularly juicy tale revolves around the de Caluwé family, who inherited Haus Blegge in the late 18th century. When Johann Franz Wilhelm de Caluwé fell head over heels for Anna Maria Schmalzgrüber, a maid at the house, his father vehemently opposed the match. Love, as they say, finds a way. Johann Wilhelm and Anna Maria married in 1800 and called Haus Blegge their home.

Over time, Haus Blegge transformed into a social hub. Ernst Schmidt, a prominent city councilman, made the estate a center of Bergisch Gladbach’s social scene in the late 19th century. Finally, in 1951, it found a new purpose as a property of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus from Hiltrup. Today, Haus Blegge stands as a quiet witness, whispering tales of love, ambition, and the relentless march of history.
