Step into the Odysseum a place where science comes alive. The Odysseum opened its doors in 2009. It’s not just a museum it’s an adventure. Built on the grounds of a former chemical factory it transformed a site of industry into a place of discovery. The Odysseum was a bold vision a collaboration between the SK-Stiftung CSC and the city of Cologne. Architect Kaspar Kraemer designed this unique space. Its initial 200 exhibits explored 14 future-relevant themes.
The Odysseum isn’t just about static displays. It’s about interactive exploration. Imagine experiencing science through play. That was the heart of the Odysseum’s original concept. Its 5500 square meters housed a vast array of interactive stations. Many were completely new creations never before seen in another museum. The Odysseum embraced the metaphor of the Odyssey. It saw human development as a journey a continuous process of learning and discovery. This wasn’t just for children though. The Odysseum aimed to communicate science to a wide audience.
In 2021 the Odysseum reinvented itself. It adopted a new concept with twelve attractions designed for all ages. Temporary exhibitions became a key feature. These temporary exhibitions brought in everything from Jurassic World to a Harry Potter experience. These brought huge crowds and showed the Odysseum’s flexibility. One particularly successful event was Harry Potter Visions of Magic. It attracted over 130000 visitors even before opening. The Odysseum also hosted Ramses & The Gold of the Pharaohs. This exhibition displayed 180 original artifacts from the reign of Ramses.
Sadly the Odysseum in Kalk will close in 2025. The building has a new purpose a new school. The city council approved plans to transform the site. The Odysseum is seeking a new location. But its legacy will live on. The Odysseum left a mark on Cologne. It proved that science can be engaging fun and educational for all ages. It’s a story of innovation adaptation and ultimately a testament to the enduring power of discovery. The final exhibition Marvel The Exhibition Universe of Super Heroes will end its run in June 2025. The Odysseum’s journey is ending but its impact will be felt for years to come.
