“Coal fired” are the words that might first come to mind standing before T 2510. Today we explore a relic. It is a testament to a bygone era of industry and ingenuity.

T 2510 is not just any structure. It is a steam locomotive built in 1907 by Orenstein & Koppel. This firm was a renowned German manufacturer. The locomotive was coal fired to power its engine.

Originally, T 2510 was delivered to J.L. Hulett & Sons Ltd. This company was based in Cairo. But, the story does not end there. T 2510 found its way to Luipaardsvlei Estate & Gold Mines. This was in South Africa. It was given the number 4. The gauge was adjusted to 610 mm.

The locomotive then moved to the Sandstone Heritage Trust. This is in Hoekfontein. It is located in the Free State of South Africa. Before its preservation, T 2510 spent time at Halfway House and Krugersdorp Safari Park.

Imagine the sights and sounds. The hiss of steam. The clanging of metal. The rhythmic chug. T 2510 was a workhorse. It hauled materials. It supported the mining operations. The locomotive played its vital role.

T 2510 is an 0-4-0T type locomotive. This means it has a specific wheel arrangement. Zero leading wheels. Four driving wheels. Zero trailing wheels. The “T” indicates it is a tank engine. The water tank is mounted on the frame.

Its 40 horsepower was modest. But, T 2510 was powerful. It was suited for its tasks. The locomotive was reliable. It was easy to operate. It was a critical component of the industrial landscape.

Preserved now, T 2510 offers us a unique window. It shows the past. It symbolizes industrial heritage. It embodies the spirit of innovation. It reminds us of the vital role of locomotives. These supported economies. They shaped communities around the world.

Take a moment to appreciate T 2510. It is a small machine. It has a big story. It links continents. It connects eras. It stands as a monument to industry. It is a symbol of human achievement.
