Built in 1901 the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche stands proudly in Cologne-Lindenthal. Its striking red brick facade earned it the nickname “Rote Kirche” the Red Church. This beautiful neo-Gothic structure was sadly almost completely destroyed in 1944 during World War II.

The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche was not always red. After its devastation the church underwent a simpler reconstruction. It was rebuilt with grey plaster. The vibrant red color we see today came much later. In 1996 extensive renovations including additions behind the choir were completed. The church was then given a fresh coat of its original reddish plaster.

The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche’s revival is a testament to the resilience of the community. The new interior features impressive pieces designed and crafted by Werner Pokorny. These include the altar the baptismal font and the pulpit. A new organ was installed in 2011. This magnificent instrument boasts 30 registers across two manuals and a pedal board. The intricate mechanics of this organ are a marvel of engineering.

The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche’s story is one of destruction and rebirth. It’s a story of community spirit. It is a story of architectural preservation. More importantly it’s a vibrant place of worship. The Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche continues to serve its community. It remains a cherished landmark in Cologne. The church hosts numerous events including concerts throughout the year. Many concerts are free and open to the public. Visit the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche. Experience its rich history and its warm welcoming atmosphere. Listen to the music. Feel the spirit.
