Didn’t expect such a unique church, did you? St. Theodor is not just another church. It is a symbol of faith, resilience, and community in Cologne-Vingst. We stand before a modern architectural marvel. It is a testament to Cologne’s post-war reconstruction.
Let’s delve into the story of St. Theodor. The first church in Vingst was St. Martin. It became too small for the growing community. In 1937, the foundation was laid for a larger church. In 1938, the community moved into the new building nearby. The baptismal font from St. Martin was moved too. The church was renamed St. Theodor. This was suggested by Father Theodor Baaken. He donated 10,000 Reichsmark for the construction.
Tragedy struck during the Second World War. The church was hit in an attack on June 16-17, 1943. Further attacks in July and November 1944 completely destroyed it. Until 1949, a makeshift church was used. A new church was built from poor materials.
Disaster struck again on April 13, 1992. An earthquake severely damaged the already dilapidated church. It had to be demolished except for the tower. The tower stood on its own foundations. The community held an anonymous architectural competition for a new building. Architect Paul Böhm won. He designed a modern circular building of ocher-colored concrete. The old, darker church tower was integrated into the new structure.
Archbishop Joachim Cardinal Meisner consecrated the new church on March 16, 2002. It became a central gathering place for the residents. It offers religious services and community events.
Now let’s talk about the architectural concept. Parish priest Franz Meurer wanted the new church to have a usable base. It needed to serve social purposes. This included a clothing store, a kitchen and rooms for food distribution. There was also a community workshop and garage. These features embody the core dimensions of church action. These are worship, service to humanity, proclamation and community. Mercy is the base of everything. The community service basement is the foundation for the entire church building. Tangential to the circular church space, there is an open café and a long gallery for art exhibitions. Secular and sacred spaces are in dialogue. They are not mixed but related and belong together. Community and equality arise in turning to others. They find special expression in worship.
A spiral path leads to the roof. It winds around the outside of the church. The Stations of the Cross by Matthias Heiermann are arranged along this path. The accessible roof offers a view over the city. This view reminds us of the Stations of the Cross. It keeps the people in the district in mind. Franz Meurer sees this as a fourth dimension of church action. It’s about bearing witness to what sustains oneself.
Let’s turn our attention to the organ. It was built in 2001/02 by organ builder Siegfried Schulte. He reused material from the previous organ. The instrument has 25 registers and about 1,700 pipes. These are spread over two manuals and a pedal. The playing and register actions are electric.
