“Koper Capodistria a city steeped in history” What a sight it is.

Before you stands Koper Capodistria a Slovenian city on the Adriatic coast. Its rich past is interwoven with Venetian rule Byzantine emperors and even Lombard invasions. This wasn’t always Koper though. Roman settlers knew it as Insula Caprea Goat Island. Later it became Aegida then Justinopolis.

Imagine the Roman author Pliny the Elder mentioning Aegida in his Naturalis Historia. He couldn’t have foreseen Koper’s future. The city thrived under Venetian control becoming Caput Histriae head of Istria. This explains its Italian name Capodistria still used today. The Venetian Gothic architecture is breathtaking.

The 15th-century Praetorian Palace stands proudly on the city square. It was constructed from older houses connected by a loggia. Now it houses Koper’s tourist office a fitting tribute to its Venetian heritage.

Visit the Cathedral of the Assumption. Built in the 12th century it has one of Slovenia’s oldest bells. The bell was cast by Nicolò and Martino sons of Master Giacomo from Venice. The upper terrace offers stunning views of the Bay of Trieste. There you can admire the Sacra Conversatione a masterpiece by Vittore Carpaccio.

The population of Koper fluctuated dramatically. The 16th century saw a devastating plague. This drastically reduced the population from 10000 to 12000. When Trieste became a free port Koper’s importance declined. Its trade monopoly was lost.

After World War I Koper was assigned to Italy. Then it became part of the Free Territory of Trieste under Yugoslav control. Many Italian inhabitants left. The city regained prominence after Slovenian independence in 1991. It became Slovenia’s sole commercial port a major economic driver.

Today Koper Capodistria is a vibrant city. It is a testament to its resilience and its enduring spirit. A rich history and impressive architecture await you. Discover the story of Koper Capodistria a coastal gem.
