Could a mosque be a symbol of openness? The DITIB-Zentralmoschee in Cologne, a grand structure of glass and concrete, aimed for just that. This mosque, one of Europe’s largest, sparked heated debates and even protests during its planning. Some saw its size, especially its 55-meter-high minarets, as a threat, a sign of “creeping Islamization.” Others, though, including then-mayor Fritz Schramma, believed that Muslims deserved a dignified place of worship. The DITIB-Zentralmoschee was designed by Paul Böhm, an architect known for building churches. He envisioned a mosque with glass walls and an open staircase, inviting the public in. The mosque’s dome, a blend of concrete and glass, was designed to resemble a flower bud, symbolizing peace and openness. Despite Böhm’s vision, the DITIB-Zentralmoschee faced setbacks. Disagreements arose between Böhm and the mosque’s administration, leading to his departure from the project in 2011. The mosque’s inauguration in 2018, attended by Turkish President Erdogan, further fueled controversy. Despite the challenges, the DITIB-Zentralmoschee stands tall, a testament to the complex relationship between religion, integration, and public perception in modern Germany.
