“Ruins” whispers the wind as it gusts around the Queen’s Blockhouse. This is no ordinary pile of stones. It’s a silent witness to a pivotal moment in Cape Town’s history.

Welcome to the Queen’s Blockhouse. It may seem ruinous now. But imagine it in its prime. This blockhouse was strategically built on the Zonnebloem Estate. It was one of three tasked to defend Cape Town. The other two were the King’s Blockhouse and the Prince of Wales Blockhouse.

Let’s step back in time. The year is 1795. The British have just occupied the Cape of Good Hope. They quickly realize that the Castle of Good Hope alone wouldn’t protect them. General JH Craig, commanding the British forces, ordered additional defenses. He chose the slopes of Devil’s Peak. The Queen’s Blockhouse was one of these fortifications. It was built along with the King’s Blockhouse and Prince of Wales Blockhouse. These structures formed a defensive line. They guarded the land approaches to Cape Town and Table Bay.

Interestingly, these blockhouses weren’t just functional. The British chose a medieval architectural style. This was a statement. It affirmed their presence at the southern tip of Africa.

The Queen’s Blockhouse, along with its counterparts, served as a watchtower. From here, soldiers scanned the horizon. They looked for any potential threats. They were the eyes of the city, constantly vigilant.

The King’s Blockhouse which is nearby, was named in honor of King George III. But this one was named after the Queen. The King’s Blockhouse offers impressive views. You can see for 120km from there.

Sadly, the Queen’s Blockhouse and the Prince of Wales Blockhouse have fallen into disrepair. But not the King’s Blockhouse. It was retained as a signal station. It facilitated communication between Table Bay and False Bay.

In 1814, the defensive line was further strengthened. Additional redoubts were constructed. At one point, this line even marked the official boundary between Cape Town and the country districts.

Today, the Queen’s Blockhouse stands as a reminder of a bygone era. It whispers tales of British occupation and strategic defense. Although it is ruinous, it’s a vital piece of Cape Town’s military history. It was declared a National Monument on 4 February 1938. So take a moment. Imagine the soldiers who once stood here. And consider the weight of history that these stones still hold.
