This simple memorial commemorates the Brühl synagogue. A place of worship and community. It once stood proudly on this very spot. Its story is one of both vibrant life and devastating loss. This beautiful structure however was not destined to last. The horrors of Kristallnacht in 1938 brought devastation. On November 10th 1938 the synagogue was destroyed. It was vandalized. It was set ablaze. Its destruction was swift and complete. The remaining ruins were soon demolished. A private individual purchased the land in 1939. The site was cleared. The synagogue was effectively erased from the physical landscape.

However the memory of the Brühl synagogue persists. A street nearby was renamed An der Synagoge. This serves as a constant reminder of its existence. A more significant gesture of remembrance followed. On November 9th 1993 a memorial was dedicated. It stands near the former synagogue’s foundation. This plaque before us is part of that memorial. It represents a powerful symbol. It’s a symbol of remembrance. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The Synagoge Brühl Plaque is more than just a plaque.
