Established in 1917 Marine Corps Base Quantico stands before you. A sprawling complex it covers nearly 55148 acres. It’s situated across three Virginia counties Prince William Stafford and Fauquier. Quantico is more than just a base. It’s a significant piece of American military history. It’s known as the Crossroads of the Marine Corps.
Initially the area was home to the Patowomacks a Native American tribe. The name Quantico itself likely comes from a Native American word meaning by the large stream. Later European settlers arrived. The area thrived due to the tobacco trade and its position on major north-south routes.
Before the base Quantico was a small village. It even boasted a beach and attracted tourists. But the start of World War I changed everything. The Marine Corps needed a large training facility near Washington D.C. Quantico proved ideal. Its location and available land were perfect.
The base’s early years were marked by intense training. Thousands of Marines prepared for the war in Europe. They practiced in trenches. Some of these trenches remain near the Medal of Honor Golf Course. The base housed the forerunners of many important Marine Corps schools. Officer Candidates School and The Basic School are among them. Quantico trained over 30000 Marines for World War I.
The base continued to grow. It became home to the first Marine Aircraft Wing. The first helicopter squadron Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) was formed there. HMX-1 has the important mission of transporting US Presidents. Amphibious warfare techniques pivotal to Pacific victories in World War II were developed at Quantico.
Today Quantico remains a vital military installation. It’s home to numerous units and commands. The FBI Academy is located on the base as well as training facilities for the DEA and other agencies. It’s a vibrant community supporting over 12000 military and civilian personnel. The base includes a historic district recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
