Napoleon once marched through it. The Eigelstein Gate stands before us. It whispers tales of emperors, farmers, and a city’s enduring spirit.

The Eigelstein Gate. It is more than just stone and mortar. This gate is one of three surviving medieval city gates. Cologne once boasted twelve such grand entrances. Most were sadly torn down in the 19th century. But this one remains. It offers a glimpse into Cologne’s fortified past.

See how it resembles a small castle? That is because each gate was designed to control access to the city. The Eigelstein Gate specifically guarded the route north. This route was first established by the Romans. It led toward Neuss, Xanten, and Nijmegen.

Even the name “Eigelstein” has Roman roots. Burial monuments once lined this road. They were topped with pine cones. People later misinterpreted these as oak fruits. Thus, the name Eigelstein was born.

Notice the monuments within the gate’s conches. One is a wreck of the small cruiser “SMS Köln”. This warship, named after the city, sank in the North Sea during World War I. Over 500 lives were lost. The wreck washed ashore. It was then brought here for inspection.

On the other side is a copy of the “Kölsche Boor”. This figure symbolizes Cologne’s defensive nature. The “Kölsche Boor” carries the city keys. This represents the cabbage farmers who helped defend the city.

The “Kölsche Boor” was placed here for Emperor Wilhelm II’s visit. This gave rise to a saying. “Halt Fass am Rich Do, Kölscher Boor, mag et falle soess ov soor”. It means “Hold fast to the Reich, you Cologne farmer, may it fall sweet or sour.” It reflects Cologne’s history as a free imperial city. It also urges loyalty to the new empire.

Royalty has passed through the Eigelstein Gate. Maria de Medici and Napoleon entered Cologne through this very gate.

Today, the Eigelstein Gate has a peaceful atmosphere. Since 1994, the city has entrusted it to the Offene Jazz Haus Schule e.V.. The gate can also be rented for celebrations. Its old walls now echo with laughter and music.

If the weather is nice, relax in one of the many cafes in front of the Eigelstein Gate. Feel the pulse of the city and neighborhood. It is especially tangible here.

The Eigelstein Gate stands as a reminder of Cologne’s rich history. It has witnessed Roman roads, imperial visits, and modern celebrations. As we stand here, we connect with centuries of Cologne’s story. It is a story etched in stone and alive in the city’s spirit.
