Longing for a peaceful retreat? Shing Mun Picnic Site No. 16 offers just that. This is your gateway to the broader Shing Mun Country Park. This park was established in 1977. It spans 14 square kilometers.

Shing Mun Country Park is a haven. It stretches from Lead Mine Pass to Shing Mun catchwater road. Tai Mo Shan and Grassy Hill define its borders. Imagine this area as one of Hong Kong’s first designated country parks.

Back in 1971, recreation facilities were tested here. The public loved them. This early success paved the way for the park’s official creation.

During World War II, the Japanese occupation impacted Shing Mun. Most trees were cut down. After the war, a massive reforestation effort began. Initially, Pinus massoniana was planted. Later, other species were introduced. These included Pinus elliottii and Acacia confusa. Today, Shing Mun boasts major forest plantations.

Wildlife sightings are rare near Tsuen Wan. However, you might spot squirrels. Barking deer are occasionally seen. Wild boars and pangolins also reside here. Monkeys sometimes migrate from Kam Shan Country Park.

Geologically, the park features granitic and volcanic rocks. Volcanic rocks form the higher ground. Granitic rocks make up the lower areas. Wolfram was mined east of the park. Mining started in 1936. It stopped during World War II. It resumed in 1951. Mining continued until 1968 when prices dropped.

The Shing Mun Country Park Visitor Centre displays the park’s history. Learn about the reservoir and mining industry. See animal and mineral specimens.

The Shing Mun Arboretum occupies 4 hectares. It features over 300 plant species. These are native to Hong Kong or Southern China. The arboretum includes bamboos and protected plants.

The Pineapple Dam Nature Trail offers an educational stroll. It is located next to the Shing Mun Reservoir. Before the reservoir, pineapples grew here. Hakka villagers called it Pineapple Dam.

Along the trails, watch out for monkeys. Do not feed them. Feeding is prohibited and alters their behavior. Keep food in your backpack. Avoid staring at the monkeys.

Paperbark trees line the main reservoir road. Their peeling bark is distinctive. These trees create a scenic backdrop. The paperbark tree grove is popular for photos.

The Shing Mun War Relics Trail offers a historical journey. This trail showcases remnants of World War II defenses.

To reach Shing Mun Country Park, take minibus 82 from Tsuen Wan. No parking is available inside the park. Embrace nature and history at Shing Mun Picnic Site No. 16.
